Day 10: The Difference Between Holy and Unholy

Opening Prayer

Father, I ask You today to teach me the difference between what is holy and what is unholy, what is clean and what is unclean. I grew up in a world that blurred these lines constantly, and I have not always seen clearly. Give me eyes to discern what belongs in my life and what does not. I want every corner of my life to be holy ground. In Jesus' name, amen.

Key Verse: "They shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the unholy, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean." — Ezekiel 44:23

Today's Truth: God calls His people to discern the difference between the holy and the unholy. What we do not discern, we cannot guard against. And what we allow into our lives and homes becomes part of the spiritual environment in which we live.

Extended Reflection

The Lost Art of Discernment

There is a verse in Ezekiel that should be required reading for every believer: "They shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the unholy, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean" (44:23). This was God's instruction to the priests of Israel regarding what they were to teach the people. It was not optional instruction. It was core curriculum.

Tragically, this instruction has been largely abandoned in modern Christianity. The church as a whole has done a poor job of teaching believers to discern between the holy and the unholy. The result is that Christian homes across the country are filled with objects, entertainment, art, music, and associations that are actively contaminating the spiritual environment — and most believers have no idea.

Rebecca Brown describes discovering this widespread ignorance through her teaching ministry. She found that most Christians had no understanding of what God's Word actually classifies as unclean. They had never been taught. And their ignorance was costing them dearly.

What Makes Something Unclean?

The categories of unclean things are broader than most Christians realize. They include:

Objects associated with idolatry and demon worship. Any object used in worship of false gods — whether ancient idols, statues of non-Christian deities, ritualistic masks, or contemporary occult artwork — carries spiritual contamination. Deuteronomy 7:25–26 is unambiguous: "You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire; you shall not covet the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, lest you be snared by it; for it is an abomination to the LORD your God. Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it."

Objects associated with the occult. This includes horoscopes, tarot cards, Ouija boards, astrology charts, books on witchcraft or New Age spirituality, crystals used for metaphysical purposes, and a wide range of other items that serve as vehicles for demonic contact.

Art that depicts or honors demonic themes. Certain categories of visual art — graphic depictions of violence, sexual immorality, occult symbols, or imagery associated with false religions — serve as spiritual portals. The enemy uses beauty and art as vehicles, which is why this category requires particular discernment.

Gifts from people involved in the occult. Objects given by people who practice witchcraft, Satanism, or other occult arts can carry demonic assignments. This does not mean that every gift from a non-Christian is cursed — but it is a category worth praying over.

Food sacrificed to idols. The New Testament addresses this in 1 Corinthians 8–10. While there is nuance here, participating in religious ceremonies that involve food offered to idols is something believers should avoid.

The Principle of Contamination

The underlying spiritual principle is this: objects that have been dedicated to demonic purposes, used in demonic rituals, or associated with the worship of false gods carry spiritual contamination. This contamination can serve as a landing pad for demon spirits and as an open door for curses to operate.

This is not superstition. It is consistent with the spiritual principles laid out throughout Scripture. When Israel entered the promised land, they were commanded to destroy the idols and the altars of the Canaanites — completely, without exception. The reason God was so insistent was precisely because these objects were spiritually contaminated and would serve as ongoing entry points for demonic influence.

The same principle applies in our homes today. A nation of people who have imported art and objects from every culture on earth, without any spiritual discernment about what those objects represent, has welcomed into their homes a vast array of spiritual contamination.

The Good News: Cleansing Is Available

The same Bible that warns about unclean things also provides the solution. Through repentance, through the destruction or removal of contaminated objects, and through the cleansing work of the Holy Spirit, homes and lives can be completely purified. The blood of Jesus is more powerful than any contamination.

Acts 19 records a powerful example. When many of the Ephesian believers repented and turned from their occult practices, "many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver" (v.19). They did not donate the books to the library. They did not sell them. They burned them. And the Word of God spread and prevailed because the contamination had been removed.

This is the standard. Not compromise, not moderation — complete removal of what is unclean.

Deeper Study: Key Scriptures

  1. Ezekiel 44:23 — "They shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the unholy, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean."
  2. Deuteronomy 7:25–26 — "You shall not bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it."
  3. Acts 19:18–20 — The burning of occult books in Ephesus.
  4. 2 Corinthians 6:14–17 — "What fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?... Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord."
  5. Leviticus 19:31 — "Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them."

Practical Application

Today's Action Steps:

  1. Walk Through Your Home: Do a room-by-room walk through your home. In each room, ask the Holy Spirit: "Is there anything here that is spiritually unclean? Anything that doesn't belong?" Write down what comes to mind in each room.

  2. Examine Your Entertainment: Review what you have been watching, reading, listening to, and playing in the last 30 days. Ask honestly: does this honor God? Does it glorify things He calls unclean? Write an honest assessment.

  3. Examine Art and Decorations: Look carefully at the artwork, decorations, and objects in your home. Is there anything that depicts occult themes, false religions, or demonic imagery — even in a "decorative" context?

  4. Pray Over Your Home: Anoint your home with oil. Walk room by room, pray aloud: "Lord, I dedicate this room to You. I cleanse it by the blood of Jesus. I command every unclean spirit associated with any unclean thing in this room to leave now, in Jesus' name."

  5. Create a Remove List: Based on your walk-through and examination, create a list of items you will remove from your home this week. Set a date by which you will complete the removal — and be specific about how you will dispose of them (prayer and then trash, not donation to pass on the contamination).

Personal Reflection Questions

  1. Discernment Question: How developed is my ability to discern between the holy and the unholy in my daily environment? Have I received training in this area?
  2. Home Question: If the Holy Spirit were to do a complete spiritual inventory of my home, what do I think He would identify as unclean? Am I surprised by that thought?
  3. Contamination Question: Have there been times in my life when bringing certain objects, media, or relationships into my life seemed to coincide with increased spiritual attack or distance from God?
  4. Commitment Question: Am I willing to remove something from my life or home if the Holy Spirit identifies it as unclean — even if it is expensive, sentimental, or socially acceptable?
  5. Gifts Question: Is there anything in my home that was given to me by someone involved in the occult or occult-influenced practices? Have I prayed over those objects?

Point to Ponder

Your home is your most important mission field. What you allow inside its doors shapes the spiritual atmosphere in which you and your family live, pray, and grow. Guard it fiercely.

The enemy does not need a dramatic entrance. He enters through the things we casually allow in — through the screen, through the shelf, through the art on the wall. Discernment is your first line of defense.

Closing Prayer

Father, I ask You to give me holy discernment. I want to see what You see when I look at my home, my entertainment, my possessions, and my associations. I ask for the courage to remove anything that does not belong in the life of Your child.

I renounce every unclean thing that I have knowingly or unknowingly allowed into my life and home. I ask Your forgiveness for my carelessness. I ask the Holy Spirit to search every corner — every room, every shelf, every screen, every relationship — and reveal what needs to go.

I dedicate my home afresh to You today. It is a sanctuary — a place where Your Spirit dwells, where Your peace reigns, and where Your children are protected. Let nothing unclean remain within its walls. In Jesus' name, amen.

Today's Declaration

Speak this out loud:

"My home belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ! Nothing unclean has permission to remain here. I dedicate every room, every possession, every corner of my home to the glory of God. I discern between the holy and the unholy. I choose the holy. I choose the clean. Every unclean spirit associated with anything in my home is commanded to leave now, in Jesus' name. My household will serve the Lord! In Jesus' name!"

Evening Reflection

Before bed, answer these in your journal:

  1. What did the Holy Spirit identify in my home during my walk-through?
  2. What on my entertainment or possession list surprised me when I evaluated it against God's standard?
  3. What specific items am I committing to remove, and when?
  4. What did it feel like to anoint my home and declare it dedicated to God?
