Day 20: How Ritualistic Curses Work

Opening Prayer

Father, I ask You today to open my understanding to a category of spiritual attack that many believers never learn about — ritualistic curses. I don't want to be ignorant of how the enemy operates in this area. Give me the knowledge to recognize it and the authority to break it. In Jesus' name, amen.

Key Verse: "For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places." — Ephesians 6:12 (NLT)

Today's Truth: Ritualistic curses are deliberately crafted spiritual weapons placed by people who serve Satan. They are not random — they are targeted and specific. But they are no match for the blood of Jesus Christ.

Extended Reflection

The Reality of Deliberate Spiritual Attacks

Most Christians accept the idea that spiritual warfare involves the enemy working generally against all believers. Fewer are prepared to consider that there are human beings who actively serve Satan — who deliberately craft curses and direct them at specific people, churches, and ministries.

Yet this is exactly what Scripture describes. The Old Testament records multiple instances of people attempting to curse specific individuals — Balaam hired to curse Israel, wicked advisors using cursing against their enemies, and nations employing spiritual practitioners to gain advantage in conflict.

The New Testament is equally direct. Paul identifies Elymas the sorcerer in Acts 13 as a servant of the devil who was "full of all deceit and all fraud" and who was trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith. This was not a general spiritual battle — it was a specific, human-directed spiritual attack against the work of the gospel.

Rebecca Brown, through her years of ministry to those coming out of Satanism, has encountered ritualistic curses in great detail. These are deliberate spiritual attacks, often performed through specific rituals by people who have surrendered themselves to Satan's service.

The Mechanisms of Ritualistic Curses

Ritualistic curses are placed through several mechanisms:

Through occultic drawings and symbols. Certain symbols, drawn in specific ways and with specific intention, function as spiritual anchors for demonic power. When these are drawn on paper and placed under someone's doorstep, mailed to them, or hidden in their belongings, they serve as landing pads for the curse.

Through the spirit realm directly. Experienced practitioners of Satanism and witchcraft can direct curses through the spirit realm without any physical object — through ritual ceremony, blood sacrifice, and invocation of demonic power directed at a specific target.

Through personal items. Objects belonging to the target — photographs, hair, clothing, jewelry, belongings — can be used in rituals to create a spiritual link between the ritual and the person. This is one reason that those deeply involved in spiritual warfare often guard their personal items carefully.

Through cursed gifts. Objects can be deliberately prepared with demonic power and given as gifts to the intended target. The gift itself serves as the vehicle through which the curse operates once it enters the recipient's environment.

Through animals and pets. In some instances, an animal given as a gift or left near a person's home can be used as a vehicle for a demonic assignment. This is an unusual category, but it is documented in Rebecca Brown's experience with people exiting Satanism.

Who Receives Ritualistic Curses?

The primary targets of deliberate ritualistic curses tend to be:

If you are in any of these categories — particularly if you are effective in your spiritual life and ministry — you should be aware that you may receive deliberate spiritual attacks from people who serve the enemy.

The Good News: These Curses Can Be Broken

Deliberate ritualistic curses are not more powerful than the name of Jesus Christ. They are powerful in the context of a life where legal grounds exist or where the believer does not know how to exercise authority. But a believer who is walking in obedience, who keeps their life clean, who has removed all cursed objects from their environment, and who regularly exercises authority in Jesus' name is a poor target for a ritualistic curse.

Even when such a curse lands, it can be broken:

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal whether a ritualistic curse is operating in your life
  2. Confess any known sin that may have given the enemy access
  3. Break the curse specifically: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I break every ritualistic curse that has been placed against me and command every spirit associated with it to leave now"
  4. Ask God to locate and neutralize any physical objects that have been used in rituals against you — even those you cannot find

Deeper Study: Key Scriptures

  1. Acts 13:8–12 — Elymas the sorcerer — a human agent of spiritual attack against the gospel.
  2. Numbers 22–24 — Balak hiring Balaam to curse Israel — the most detailed biblical account of deliberately targeted cursing.
  3. Psalm 109:17–18 — The principle of curses returning to those who send them when the target is innocent.
  4. Isaiah 54:17 — "No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn."
  5. Luke 10:19 — Authority over all the power of the enemy — including deliberately targeted attacks.

Practical Application

Today's Action Steps:

  1. Read Numbers 22–24: Study the story of Balaam. Notice that God turned every curse into a blessing over His people. Write down three lessons from this story about how God responds when His people are the target of deliberate spiritual attacks.

  2. Self-Assessment: Honestly evaluate your vulnerability to ritualistic curses. Are you in ministry? Have you left an occult group or cult? Have you received unusual gifts from people involved in the occult? Write an honest assessment.

  3. Pray for Revelation: Ask the Holy Spirit specifically: "Is there a ritualistic curse operating against me? Is there a cursed object in my home or environment that I am not aware of?" Ask God to expose and neutralize any physical objects used in rituals against you.

  4. Break Any Ritualistic Curses: Speak aloud: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I break every ritualistic curse that has been deliberately placed against me, my family, my home, and my ministry. Every demonic assignment sent against me through ritual is cancelled now. Every spirit associated with these curses is commanded to leave immediately in Jesus' name."

  5. Establish a Prayer Shield: Begin praying a specific spiritual protection prayer over yourself and your family daily. Ask a trusted prayer partner to agree with you in covering your ministry and family with prayer.

Personal Reflection Questions

  1. Awareness Question: Before today, were you aware that human beings could deliberately place curses on other people? How does this awareness change your understanding of spiritual warfare?
  2. Target Question: Are you the kind of person who might attract deliberate spiritual attack — someone whose effectiveness for God's Kingdom makes them a priority target for the enemy?
  3. Gifts Question: Have you received any unusual gifts from people involved in occult practices? Have you prayed over them and discerned whether they carry a spiritual assignment?
  4. Balaam Lesson Question: What is the most encouraging truth from the story of Balaam and Balak for someone who is facing deliberate spiritual attack?
  5. Protection Question: What specific steps are you going to take to maintain a consistent prayer shield over your life, your family, and your ministry?

Point to Ponder

The enemy's best weapons are specific and targeted — but they are no match for the blood of Jesus Christ and the authority of His name. No weapon formed against you shall prosper. Not even a deliberate one.

God turned every curse Balaam tried to pronounce over Israel into a blessing. He will do the same for you. The mouth of the enemy against you is in the hands of God — and He can turn curses into prophecy, into blessing, and into testimony.

Closing Prayer

Father, I thank You that no weapon formed against me will prosper — including deliberately crafted spiritual weapons. You are my shield and my exceeding great reward. No Balaam can curse what You have blessed.

I break today every ritualistic curse that has been placed against me, my family, my home, and my ministry. Every spirit sent through ritual is commanded to leave in Jesus' name. Every cursed object used against me is rendered powerless by the blood of Jesus.

I ask You to go before me and behind me, to hem me in above and below. Let Your angels encamp around me. Let the fire of Your glory surround my home. And turn every attack of the enemy into a testimony of Your power. In Jesus' name, amen.

Today's Declaration

Speak this out loud:

"No ritualistic curse has power over me! Every spiritual weapon formed against me is broken in the name of Jesus Christ! I am covered by the blood of the Lamb. No Balaam can curse what God has blessed. Every spirit sent against me through ritual is commanded to leave now — you have no right to remain! I declare: no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I am hidden in Christ, protected by His blood, and covered by His authority. The enemy's attacks are powerless against me! In Jesus' name!"

Evening Reflection

Before bed, answer these in your journal:

  1. What did I learn from the story of Balaam that I found most encouraging?
  2. Did the Holy Spirit reveal any ritualistic curse operating against me? What did I do about it?
  3. Am I now more alert to the possibility of deliberate spiritual attacks? How does that awareness change my prayer life?
  4. Who has committed to pray a specific prayer shield over me? Who am I covering in prayer?
