Today's Truth: Not all curses are the same. Correctly identifying the type of curse determines the correct remedy. Wisdom — the right application of knowledge — gives life to those who possess it.
Imagine going to a doctor with a fever. The doctor, without examining you, gives you antibiotics. But your fever is not caused by bacteria — it is caused by a virus. The antibiotics do nothing. You remain sick. Not because treatment is impossible, but because the wrong treatment was applied.
This is exactly what happens when Christians try to break curses without understanding which kind they are dealing with. They pray general prayers. They rebuke Satan. They confess sins they may not have committed. And when nothing changes, they either conclude that curses are not real or that God is not answering — when the actual problem is that they applied the wrong remedy.
Rebecca Brown makes an essential distinction between three types of curses. Understanding these three categories is one of the most practical things you can learn in your spiritual warfare toolkit.
These are divine judgments that come in response to persistent, unrepented sin. They are not arbitrary or punitive — they are the inevitable consequence of walking in deliberate rebellion against a holy God who has already revealed His standards clearly.
The curses of Deuteronomy 28:15–68 represent this category. When Israel turned from God, disease came. When they refused to repent, drought came. When they continued in rebellion, foreign armies came. Each escalation was God's attempt to get their attention — not to destroy them, but to bring them back.
The remedy for Type 1 curses has two parts:
Importantly, once the root sin is dealt with, you must also command any demon spirits that gained access through the sin to leave in Jesus' name. Repentance removes the legal ground; commanding the spirits completes the cleansing.
These are curses placed by the enemy that God permits because we have given Satan legitimate grounds to operate. This is the category covered in the story of Achan — God did not send the curse, but He did not prevent it either, because Israel's sin gave Satan a legal foothold.

The remedy for Type 2 curses has three parts:
Notice that you must address both the legal issue (repentance) and the practical issue (breaking the curse and commanding the spirits to leave). Doing one without the other is incomplete.
These are attacks that Satan launches without cause — simply because he hates you, hates the work God is doing through you, or wants to prevent a specific assignment from being completed. There is no legal ground. He is simply a bully attacking without legitimate permission.
The good news is that this type is the easiest to break. Because Satan has no legal right, he has no standing. A direct command in Jesus' name — spoken with authority and faith — is all that is required.
The key is recognizing when this type is operating. If you have thoroughly examined your life for sin, removed cursed objects, broken every known legal ground, and the attack continues — you may be dealing with a Type 3 curse. Stand in authority, command it to break, and send the spirits away in Jesus' name.
Before you can apply the right remedy, you must ask the right questions. When facing a persistent attack or an unresolved problem, ask yourself — and the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit can reveal the answer. The Word of God provides the framework. And the name of Jesus Christ contains the power to break every kind of curse once the appropriate steps are taken.
Identify the Type: For each persistent problem on your Day 1 list, try to determine which type of curse might be operating. Ask the Holy Spirit for discernment. Write your assessment next to each item.
Examine for Type 1: Ask honestly: Is there an area of my life where I have been in persistent, unrepented rebellion against God? Something I have known is wrong but have continued in? Write it down and prepare to deal with it.
Examine for Type 2: Review your family history. Has anyone in your family been involved in the occult? Are there patterns of sin that have run through multiple generations? These are clues to legal grounds.
Practice the Three-Step Formula: For any problem you suspect is a Type 2 curse, practice the three steps: (1) Confess and repent of the specific sin. (2) Speak aloud: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I break this curse of [specific name] off my life now!" (3) Speak aloud: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I command all demon spirits associated with this curse to leave me now!"
Journal Your Discernment: Write in your freedom journal the specific curse type you believe is operating in your primary battle, what grounds you believe exist, and what steps you plan to take to address it.
The right key opens the right lock. Applying the wrong spiritual remedy to the right spiritual problem produces frustration, not freedom. Discernment is not a luxury — it is a necessity.
God has not hidden the remedy from you. He has given you His Word, His Spirit, and His name. With those three tools, every curse can be broken — when you know which one you are facing.
Father, give me the wisdom to correctly identify what is operating in my life. I do not want to fight shadows or apply remedies to problems I misunderstand. I ask the Holy Spirit today to give me clear discernment about the type of spiritual battle I am facing.
For any Type 1 curse — any area where Your divine judgment is operating because of my sin — I repent today. I name the sin. I turn from it. I ask You to remove the curse Your justice requires.
For any Type 2 curse — any area where Satan has legal grounds — I commit to thoroughly searching out and removing those grounds. I will repent, break the curse, and command the spirits to go.
For any Type 3 curse — any attack without legal basis — I stand in the full authority of Jesus Christ and command it broken now.
Thank You that You have provided a remedy for every attack. I will use what You have given me. In Jesus' name, amen.

I am not a passive victim of spiritual attack — I am an active spiritual warrior equipped with the knowledge of God's Word, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the authority of Jesus Christ's name. I identify my enemy correctly. I apply the right remedy. Every curse operating in my life is broken by the blood of Jesus. In Jesus' name!"
