Father, today I want to move from understanding into action. I have learned what curses are, where they come from, and how they work. Now I ask You to equip me with the practical steps to break them. Give me boldness to speak with authority, faith to believe that the name of Jesus is truly powerful, and the follow-through to complete what You are beginning in my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
Key Verse: "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." — Acts 3:6
Today's Truth: Breaking curses is not a passive act of hoping God will do something — it is an active, verbal declaration of authority made in the name of Jesus Christ. The name of Jesus is the key that unlocks every prison.
There is something remarkable about the name of Jesus. It is not a magic formula or an incantation. It is the name of the One who conquered sin, death, hell, and every demonic power through the cross and resurrection. When you speak that name with faith — understanding the authority it carries and the One it represents — spiritual reality changes.
Acts 3 records one of the most vivid demonstrations of this. Peter and John encounter a man who has been lame from birth. Every day he is carried to the gate of the temple to beg. He asks for money. Peter's response is startling: "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk."
Notice Peter's language. He does not say: "Lord, if it be Your will, perhaps You might consider healing this man." He speaks with authority. He commands in Jesus' name. And the man's legs and ankle bones receive immediate strength.
This is the model for breaking curses. You speak. You command. You use the name of Jesus — not as a password, but as a declaration of identity: you belong to Christ, you operate in His authority, and every demonic power must acknowledge that.
Rebecca Brown lays out a clear, scriptural protocol for breaking curses. The specific steps vary slightly depending on the type of curse, but the core process is consistent:
For Curses from God (Type 1):
Step 1: Acknowledge and confess the specific sin — not vaguely, but specifically. Name it. Say it out loud to God. "Lord, I confess the sin of [specific sin]. I acknowledge that it is wrong in Your sight. I take full responsibility."
Step 2: Repent genuinely — repentance is more than sorrow. It is a change of direction. Turn away from the sin and commit to walk in the opposite direction.
Step 3: Ask God to forgive and cleanse you — rely on 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Step 4: Ask God to remove the curse — speak to God directly: "Father, I have repented of the sin that brought Your judgment. I ask You now to remove the curse from my life in Jesus' name."
Step 5: Command demons to leave — any spirits that gained access through the sin must be expelled: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I command all demon spirits that entered my life through [the sin] to leave me now!"
For Curses from Satan with Legal Right (Type 2):
Step 1: Identify and confess the sin that gave Satan the right to curse — whether your own sin or an ancestral sin. Repent thoroughly.
Step 2: Break the curse verbally and specifically — speak this out loud: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I take authority over this curse of [name of curse], and I command it to be broken now!"
Step 3: Command demon spirits to leave — "In the name of Jesus Christ, I command all demon spirits associated with this curse to leave me now and never return!"
For Curses from Satan Without Legal Right (Type 3):
Step 1: Break the curse directly — "In the name of Jesus Christ, I take authority over this curse of [name], and I command it to be broken now!"
Step 2: Command demon spirits to leave — "In the name of Jesus Christ, I command all demon spirits associated with this curse to leave me now!"
No repentance is required for Type 3 because there is no sin that created the grounds. Simply use your authority.
Some believers wonder why they must speak these commands aloud rather than simply praying silently. The answer lies in how spiritual authority operates. Jesus modeled this — He spoke to storms, to demons, to fig trees, and to dead people. He commanded out loud.
Demons are not subject to your thoughts — they are subject to the authority of Christ expressed through you. When you open your mouth and speak in Jesus' name, you are engaging the spiritual reality of your authority. There is no power in mumbling a curse-breaking prayer under your breath while hoping no one hears. Speak it with conviction. Speak it with authority. Speak it with faith.
Breaking the curse and commanding spirits to leave is not always the end of the process. In some cases, you may also need to:
The point is that breaking a curse is often a beginning, not a final act. It removes the legal grounds and expels the spirits — but restoration takes time, and ongoing vigilance is required to maintain what was gained.
Choose Your Primary Battle: Identify the single most persistent problem in your life. Determine which type of curse is most likely operating. Prepare to address it today.
Follow the Steps: Using the protocol above, work through the appropriate steps for the curse type you identified. Do this out loud, in private, with full sincerity. Write in your journal what happened as you prayed.
Practice Verbal Authority: Regardless of whether you currently have a specific curse to break, practice speaking with spiritual authority. Read Luke 10:19 aloud, then speak a general declaration: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I take authority over every demonic influence that has operated in my life without my permission, and I command it to leave now."
Anoint Your Home: Today, walk through your home with a small amount of olive oil. Anoint each door frame and window, speaking: "I dedicate this home to the Lord Jesus Christ. No curse can operate here. No demon has permission here. This home is covered by the blood of Jesus." Do this with faith and conviction.
Build a Warfare Prayer: Write out a personal warfare prayer based on today's step-by-step protocol. Customize it to your specific situation. Date it. Pray it over yourself today.
The key to the prison is in your hand. It has been there since the moment you were filled with the Holy Spirit. The question is not whether you have the authority — it is whether you will use it.
The disciples Peter and John had no money. They had nothing the world would value. But they had the name of Jesus Christ — and that name was more than enough to do what no amount of money ever could.
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me authority in Your name. Thank You that when I speak Your name in faith, every demon must obey, every curse must break, and every assignment of the enemy against my life must cease. You did not give me a spirit of timidity but of power, love, and a sound mind.
Today I exercise that authority. I speak over every curse that has operated in my life. I address them by name as the Holy Spirit has revealed them. I break them in Your name. I command every spirit associated with them to leave my life, my home, and my family now.
I receive Your cleansing. I receive Your restoration. I receive the blessing that You have always intended for my life. And I commit to maintaining this freedom through ongoing obedience, prayer, and the sanctity of Your Word. In Jesus' powerful name, amen.
Speak this out loud:
"In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I take authority over every curse that has operated in my life! I break them now! I command every spirit associated with these curses to leave me, my family, and my home immediately, and never return! The name of Jesus is above every name — above every curse, every demon, every generational pattern of destruction. I am free! I receive my freedom now! In Jesus' name!"
Before bed, answer these in your journal:
